Except for wide-body planes, Tap Air Portugal Pet Policy welcomes small cats and dogs in the cabin. Requests to transport animals in the cabin are subject to space availability, the type of plane assigned, and the passenger's cabin class. TAP will not allow pets in the cabin on flights to the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, or Zambia.

TAP PORTUGAL PET POLICY

Small dogs and cats are welcome.

If your small dog or cat fits the standards mentioned in TAP Air Portugal pet policy, you will need an official airline pet carrier to fly in-cabin. A waterproof bottom, secure fasteners (zippers), and appropriate ventilation are for your carrier. In the carrier, your pet must be able to stand up and turn around.

The greatest dimensions allowed for a carrier is 40cm x 33cm x 17cm / 15in x 12in x 6in. Soft-sided carriers will add a few inches to your height.

Many animals may be in the same carrier if they are of the same species and their total weight, including the carrier, does not exceed 17 pounds (8 kg).

TAP Air Portugal must be notified if you are flying with a dog or cat. Your dog or cat, including the carrier, must weigh less than 17 pounds (8 kg).

Pets are not permitted in First Class or on long-distance flights.

Reservations

Reservations for your pet should be made with Tap Air Portugal Pet Policy at least 24 hours before the flight. Online reservations are not possible. There will be a limit of one pet per passenger and one pet per carrier. Make your reservation before purchasing your ticket.

Service Animals

TAP Portugal will permit service dogs for free in the cabin. Other small dogs and cats must travel in an airline-compliant pet carrier no larger than 40 x 33 x 17cm/15 x 12 x 6in and weighing no more than 8kg/17lb (with the animal inside). Dogs can fly without a carrier to or from the United States, but they must be no heavier than 40 kg (88 lbs) and no taller than 62 cm (24 in) to the top of the shoulders.

For pre-approval, all supporting documentation must be supplied.

Services for checked bags and cargo

If your pet is too huge to go beneath the seat, if it is not a dog or cat, or if the travel is lengthy, TAP Portugal can accommodate it and may transport your pet in the aircraft's cargo area by its laws. The temperature and pressure in this area of the cargo department are the same as in the passenger cabin.

TIP: Inform the Captain of the airline that your pet will be flying in the cargo hold so that they can maintain the right temperature. More information about airline pet freight transport can be here.

Tap Air Portugal Pet Policy allows small dogs, cats, rabbits, hares, ferrets, and birds weighing up to 70 pounds (32 kg) on flights to, from, or through the United States, Hungary, France, or the Netherlands. On other flights, the combined weight of your pet and its crate cannot exceed 99 pounds (45 kg).

Animals will be in the aircraft's cargo hold, which has the same temperature and pressure as the passenger cabin. TIP: Inform the Captain of the airline that your pet will be flying in the cargo hold so that they can maintain the right temperature. More information about Tap Air Portugal Pet Policy freight transport can be here.
